By Plane

The nearest major airport is in the provincial centre. Road transport is required from there to reach Farah. Charter or military flights may serve provincial airfields.

By Train

By Car / Road

Access to Farah is by road. Roads are generally unpaved and conditions vary with weather and season. Shared taxis and private vehicles are the primary means of reaching the settlement from the provincial capital.

Farah is compact and walkable. For trips to outlying villages or the district centre, shared taxis and private vehicles are used. Roads within the settlement are unpaved.

Things to do

The Helmand River valley is the agricultural heartland of southern Afghanistan. The provincial capital Lashkargah has the ruins of a former British garrison and the nearby Qala-e-Bost fortress (an arch that is a national symbol of Afghanistan). The Kajaki Dam is a significant engineering landmark upstream.

Walking and hiking through the surrounding countryside and valleys are the primary activities. Fishing and birdwatching along the Helmand River. The Kajaki Dam and reservoir offer a notable landmark on the upper Helmand River.

Food & Dining

Small local eateries serve Afghan staples such as naan (flatbread), rice dishes (pulao, chalau), kebabs (kofta, tikka), and hearty stews (qorma). Mantu (dumplings) and ashak (leek-filled pasta) are also common. Tea is the universal accompaniment to every meal.

Cafes & Nightlife

Green tea (chai sabz) is the standard drink throughout Afghanistan, served with sugar and sometimes cardamom. Fresh fruit juices may be available seasonally. Alcohol is not available in public establishments. Bottled or treated water is strongly recommended for visitors.
