About Kahmard

Kahmard is a district in northern Bamyan Province, Afghanistan, located in the mountainous region between Bamyan and Baghlan. The district centre is a small town serving the surrounding rural communities. Kahmard is known for its rugged mountain scenery, ancient archaeological sites, and traditional Hazara and Tajik villages.

The district lies along the Bamyan–Baghlan road, historically an important route connecting central Afghanistan to the northern plains. The climate is typical of the central highlands: cold snowy winters and mild summers.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airports are Bamyan Airport (BIN, 90 km south-west) and Mazar-e Sharif International Airport (MZR IATA, 200 km north). A taxi from Bamyan Airport to Kahmard costs approximately 1000–1500 Afs.

By Train

By Car / Road

Kahmard is connected by road to Bamyan (90 km south-west, 2–3 hours) and Baghlan (100 km north, 2 hours). Shared taxis and minibuses operate on these routes. Road conditions can be poor in winter.

The district centre is walkable. For travel to surrounding villages, shared taxis or private vehicles are necessary.

Things to do

The mountainous landscape with dramatic valleys and traditional stone-built villages is the main attraction. The area has several ancient sites from the Buddhist period that have not been fully excavated.

Trekking and hiking in the surrounding mountains. The district offers opportunities for off-the-beaten-path exploration of central Afghanistan's natural beauty.
