The Hakone Freepass covers the Lake Ashi cruise, ropeway and local transport. Compare a JR Pass against point-to-point Shinkansen tickets for your dates.

Day-trip logistics

Nara and Mt Fuji (Kawaguchiko) are day trips from your base. Reserve the Fuji highway bus in advance during blossom season as seats sell out.

Cash and etiquette

Carry cash for smaller temples, shrines and rural buses. Onsen ryokan have specific bathing etiquette worth reading up on before arrival.
