Sapporo snowfields, Kyoto temples, and Mt. Fuji lakes on one unforgettable loop
View Day-by-DayJapan is very doable for lacto-vegetarians with planning. Every city on this route has excellent all-vegan spots; book temple shojin-ryori (Shigetsu, Daigo) several days ahead, and keep HappyCow handy. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson) are a reliable backup for veg onigiri and noodles.
A Welcome Suica card (or Suica on iPhone via Apple Pay) covers trains, subways and buses nationwide, plus convenience stores. Set it up on landing. The GO taxi app is Japan's best — register it before arrival, since SMS verification won't work on data-only tourist SIMs.
Japan is still partly cash-based. Small restaurants, rural tours and the Ine fishing village are often cash-only. 7-Eleven ATMs give the best foreign-card withdrawals; keep ¥5,000–10,000 on hand.
Early May is mild and pleasant across Honshu, cooler in Hokkaido (pack layers for Sapporo and the coast). Late-spring greenery makes Kyoto and the Fuji lakes especially scenic. Mt. Fuji views depend on clear skies — allow flexibility.
teamLab Borderless, the sumo show, and Michelin shojin-ryori restaurants all require advance reservations — some weeks ahead. Lock these in before departure to avoid disappointment.
