Good to Know

Winter road risk

The Jvari Pass on the Georgian Military Highway can close in heavy snow. Build in a buffer day, use an experienced 4x4 driver, and check road status before departing for Kazbegi.

Jain-friendly dining

Strict vegetarian and Jain meals are best secured at Indian restaurants in Tbilisi, with a single option in Kazbegi. Contact restaurants ahead to confirm no onion, garlic or root vegetables, and re-confirm in person.

Pack for two climates

Tbilisi is cold and damp near freezing; Kazbegi can sit well below zero with deep snow. Bring waterproof boots with grip, thermal layers, and sunglasses for snow glare.

Short winter days

Mid-December gives roughly nine hours of daylight, and only about three hours of sun in the mountains. Start sightseeing early and plan the mountain drive as a full-day undertaking.

Festive timing

Tbilisi's Christmas tree, light displays and markets at Orbeliani Square typically switch on around mid-December, pairing quiet low-season sightseeing with lively festive evenings.
