Filabusi

Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe

Why visit Filabusi?

Filabusi is the administrative centre of Insiza District in Matabeleland South, roughly 80–120 km south of Bulawayo, and a service town for the surrounding mining and farming communities. European prospectors and traders arrived in the area from around 1894, and the Filabusi mining district became a producer of gold (from mines such as Fred and Royal Family), as well as nickel and asbestos, though output has declined from its colonial-era peak. The town is also the site of the Filabusi Memorial, commemorating settlers killed nearby during the 1896 Ndebele uprising (First Chimurenga), including the notorious Edkins Store killings.
