Ta'izz Governorate is one of Yemen's most culturally and historically significant regions, stretching from the Red Sea coast at Mokha to the highlands around Taiz city. The governorate takes its name from its capital, Taiz — Yemen's cultural capital — which sits on the slopes of Mount Sabr at about 1,400 m elevation. The landscape varies dramatically from the hot Tihama coastal plain in the west to the cool, terraced highlands in the east. The region has been a crossroads of trade, particularly for coffee, which was exported through the historic port of Mokha (Mocha) — the origin of the coffee name. Ta'izz suffered greatly during the civil war, with front lines dividing the city for years. Security is fragile.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit is October to April, when coastal areas are bearable and the highlands are cool and pleasant. Summer months (May–September) are extremely hot on the coast and warm in the highlands.
Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Tāʻizz route around them.
WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Shared taxis and buses connect the main towns. Within Taiz city, rickshaws and shared taxis are the main modes. A 4WD is useful for mountain roads. The road from Taiz to Mokha is paved and scenic.
Where should you go?

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Ta'izz is known for its cuisine, including mandi (lamb and rice), salta (meat stew), and fresh seafood on the coast. Coffee culture is deeply rooted — the region gave the world Mocha coffee. Local honey is excellent.
What is the culture like?
The region has a strong tradition of poetry, music, and Islamic scholarship. Taiz was historically a centre of intellectual and artistic life in Yemen. The coffee trade brought diverse cultural influences to Mokha. Eid celebrations and local weddings are vibrant cultural events.
