Why visit?

Sa'dah Governorate is in northern Yemen, bordering Saudi Arabia. It is the heartland of Zaydi Shia Islam and the birthplace of the Houthi movement. The capital, Sa'dah city, is one of the most important Zaydi religious centres in Yemen. The landscape is mountainous and rugged, with elevations over 2,000 m, giving a relatively cool climate. The traditional architecture features mud-brick tower houses, though much has been destroyed by Saudi-led airstrikes during the civil war. The region has been severely affected by the conflict and is not currently safe for travel.

When is the best time to visit?

The highland climate is mild year-round. October to April is the most comfortable period. However, security conditions make travel inadvisable.

What are the standout experiences?

Due to the extreme security situation, Sa'dah is not currently viable for tourism. Historically, visitors came for the mud-brick architecture, the Zaydi religious sites, and the mountainous landscapes.
