Al Hawtah
Laḩij, Yemen
Why visit Al Hawtah?
Al Hawtah is the capital of Lahij Governorate in southern Yemen, sitting in a fertile agricultural valley inland from Aden. The town — sometimes referred to simply as Lahej — became capital of the historic Sultanate of Lahej after an earlier capital, al-Ra'ra', was destroyed during the Ottoman conquest of the Tahirids in the early 1500s. The sultanate later became a British protectorate and, from 1967, part of the People's Republic of South Yemen. Al Hawtah remains a market center for the surrounding farming communities of the Lahij valley.
