About Shibam
Shibam is a historic town in Hadhramawt Governorate, Yemen, famous for its 16th-century mud-brick tower houses that rise up to 30 m (9–10 storeys) from a narrow grid of streets. Known as the "Manhattan of the Desert," Shibam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's oldest examples of urban vertical planning. The town was founded in the 3rd century AD but most of the current tower houses date from the 16th century. The houses are built entirely of sun-dried mud bricks, with thick walls that insulate against the extreme desert heat. Floods in the wadi have damaged the town repeatedly, most recently in 2020. The climate is extremely hot in summer (up to 45°C); the best time to visit is November to March. Security has been fragile due to the civil war.

Shibam Old City — the core attraction: a walled city of towering mud-brick skyscrapers, some 9–10 storeys high. The buildings are packed tightly together with narrow alleys between them. Best photographed from the fields opposite the main gate.
Friday Mosque — the oldest mosque in Shibam, with a distinctive mud-brick minaret.
The City Walls — the old city is surrounded by a defensive wall with a single main gate.
Shibam Museum — a small museum in a restored tower house, displaying artefacts from the region. Check opening hours.
Shibam New Town — the modern extension across the road has shops, restaurants, and a market.
