Kawkaban

Kawkaban is an ancient mountain fortress town in Al Mahwit Governorate, Yemen, perched on a dramatic cliff at about 2,800 m elevation. It was the capital of the Bani Shihab dynasty in the 18th century and is one of the most spectacularly situated settlements in Yemen. The fortress walls enclose traditional stone houses, a historic mosque, and a cistern. The views from Kawkaban are breathtaking, with sheer drops on three sides. The town is a short walk from Shibam Kawkaban. The climate is cool and pleasant. Best visited March to October.

Kawkaban is accessible from Al Mahwit (12 km north, 25 min) or from Shibam Kawkaban (3 km north, 10 min by car or 30 min on foot).

The fortress is compact and walkable — it can be explored in an hour.

• Ancient cistern — a large rainwater collection cistern, essential for the fortress's water supply.

• Kawkaban Mosque — a historic mosque within the fortress.

• Explore the fortress — walk the walls and visit the imam's house.

• Photography — the cliff-top position is absolutely spectacular.

• Hike to Shibam Kawkaban — a scenic 30-minute walk connects the two fortresses.
