Shibam Kawkaban

Shibam Kawkaban is a historic fortress town in Al Mahwit Governorate, Yemen, perched on a mountain ridge about 15 km north of Al Mahwit city. It is one of Yemen's most dramatically situated settlements, with steep drops on three sides and panoramic views over the valleys below. The town has well-preserved traditional stone architecture and a historic mosque. Shibam Kawkaban is often paired with Kawkaban, a nearby fortress. The climate is cool and pleasant. Best visited March to October.

Sana'a International Airport (SAH) is about 110 km east. From Sana'a, travel via Al Mahwit or directly via mountain roads.

By Car / Road

Shibam Kawkaban is accessible from Al Mahwit (15 km north, 30 min) via a winding mountain road. A 4WD is recommended. Shared taxis from Al Mahwit are irregular.

The town is walkable. The narrow alleys and stairways require good walking shoes.
