Van Chan
Yên Bái, Viet Nam
About Van Chan
Van Chan is a mountainous district in western Yên Bái province, lying between the towns of Nghia Lo and Mu Cang Chai along National Highway 32. The district covers a wide swath of the upper Red River basin, encompassing terraced hillsides, deep valleys, and scattered ethnic minority villages. Van Chan is the second-largest district in Yên Bái by area and has a significant Thai and H'Mong population.
The district centre is Sơn Thịnh, a small town on the highway that serves as a transport hub for goods and passengers travelling between Yen Bai city and the northwestern provinces. The economy is based on agriculture (rice, tea, sugarcane), forestry, and increasingly, community-based tourism in the more scenic upland areas.
The climate is subtropical monsoon with cool winters and warm, wet summers. The best time to visit is September–November, when the rice terraces are golden and the weather is pleasant. The district's elevation ranges from 200 m in the river valleys to over 1,000 m in the hills bordering Mu Cang Chai.

Things to do
Suoi Giang Village: A Dao ethnic village at 800 m elevation, known for its ancient tea trees — some over 200 years old. The village offers stunning views of the valley and a chance to taste Shan Tuyet tea (snow Shan tea) made from the old-growth trees.
Thac Ba Lake shoreline: Van Chan shares a stretch of Thac Ba Lake's southern shore, with quiet coves and floating fishing platforms.
Đèo Ách (Ách Pass): A scenic mountain pass on the road between Van Chan and Nghia Lo, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and rice terraces. A good photo stop.
Tú Lệ Valley: The southern part of Van Chan district includes part of the scenic Tu Le valley, famous for its sticky rice terraces (see Tu Le guide).
Hamlet of Bản Tà Ghênh: A traditional Thai stilt-house village with a stream running through it. The village is set among rice fields and offers a calm rural atmosphere.
Tea plantation visit: Walk through the ancient Shan Tuyet tea groves in Suoi Giang village. The trees are moss-covered and several metres tall, unlike the low-growing tea bushes common in other regions. Tasting is free; buy the tea for around 100,000–200,000 dong per kg.
Village trekking: The hills around Suoi Giang and the Thai villages near Nghia Lo boundary offer excellent half-day trekking routes with local guides.
Homestay experience: Stay in a Dao or Thai village homestay — activities include weaving, cooking, and farming alongside your hosts.
Photography: The terraced fields and forested hills of Suoi Giang are particularly photogenic in the early morning mist.
