Why visit Huong Thuy?

Huong Thuy (Thuy Huong) is a district-level town in the south-central part of Thua Thien-Hue province, immediately south of Hue city. It sits astride National Highway 1 and the North-South railway, serving as a commuter and industrial satellite of the provincial capital. The town is best known as the location of several of the most iconic Nguyen Dynasty royal tombs, including the magnificent Tomb of Khai Dinh and the Tomb of Minh Mang, which lie within its boundaries. Huong Thuy also contains Phu Bai International Airport, making it the first stop for many visitors to the region.

The area is largely flat, transitioning from urban sprawl near Hue to agricultural land and forested hills toward the south. Like the rest of Thua Thien-Hue, Huong Thuy has a monsoon-influenced tropical climate with a rainy season from September to December and a dry season from March to August. Temperatures range from 18°C in winter to 35°C in summer.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Phu Bai International Airport (HUI IATA) is located within Huong Thuy district, 15 km south of Hue city centre. Taxis from the airport to the tombs or to Huong Thuy town centre cost 50,000–100,000 dong.

By Train

The Reunification Express line passes through Huong Thuy. The nearest major station is Hue Railway Station, 10 km north. Local trains may stop at smaller halts within the district; check with station staff.

By Car / Road

Huong Thuy lies on National Highway 1, the main north-south artery. Public buses from Hue's southern bus station (Ben Xe Phia Nam) serve Huong Thuy town and the airport regularly, costing about 10,000–15,000 dong. Taxis from Hue cost 100,000–180,000 dong.

Local buses and taxis are available for trips within Huong Thuy. Motorbike taxis (xe om) are common and inexpensive. For visiting the tombs, hiring a taxi or motorbike driver from Hue or Huong Thuy for a half-day tour is the most convenient option. Bicycles can be rented in Hue for the ride south but the distance makes it a full day's effort.
