About Thai Thuy
Thái Thụy is a coastal rural district in eastern Thái Bình Province, with its administrative capital at Diêm Điền township. Covering 257 km² with a population of about 255,000, it is one of two coastal districts in the province (alongside Tiền Hải). Nicknamed "Estuarland" (Miền cửa sông), Thái Thụy is defined by its intricate network of rivers — the Diêm Hộ, Luộc, Hóa, and Trà Lý all flow through the district before emptying into the Gulf of Tonkin.
Thái Thụy was formed in 1969 through the merger of two historic districts: Thái Ninh and Thụy Anh. The area has been settled for centuries, with records dating to the early 18th century. Diêm Điền township was established in 1986 on land donated by three coastal communes and has since grown into a class-IV municipality.
The district's coastal location gives it a mild, humid subtropical climate. Summer (May–September) is hot and rainy; winter (November–March) is cool and relatively dry. The best time to visit is September–November or March–April. The district is also known for Cồn Đen (Black Sandbank) beach, a popular weekend getaway about 40 km from Thái Bình city.

Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) in Hai Phong is the closest airport, about 55 km northeast. A taxi to Thái Thụy costs 500,000–700,000 dong (1–1.5 hours). Noi Bai Airport (HAN) in Hanoi is 130 km west (2.5 hours, 900,000–1,200,000 dong).
By Train
By Car / Road
From Thái Bình city, take National Highway 10 east, then turn south onto Provincial Road 221 to reach Diêm Điền (about 40 km, 1 hour). Regular buses connect Thái Bình city to Thái Thụy district (1 hour, 40,000–60,000 dong). During summer weekends, additional buses run to Cồn Đen beach.
Diêm Điền township is small and walkable. For visiting coastal communes, Cồn Đen, or the numerous riverine villages, hiring a motorbike is ideal. Local buses run along main routes, and motorbike taxis can be flagged for short trips (15,000–30,000 dong). Boats operate on the rivers but are primarily for fishing and transport of goods.
Things to do
Cồn Đen (Black Sandbank) Beach — A coastal stretch with fine sand and calm waters, about 40 km southeast of Thái Bình city. Popular for weekend swimming, seafood dining, and sunset views. The beach can be accessed from Diêm Điền via Provincial Road 221.
Diêm Hộ Estuary — Where the Diêm Hộ River meets the Gulf of Tonkin. A scenic spot for watching fishing boats and the region's distinctive riverine landscape.
River network views — Thái Thụy has more rivers than any other district in northern Vietnam. The multiple bridges and ferry crossings offer striking views of waterways flanked by lush vegetation.
Trà Lý River — The southern boundary of the district, with communities living along its banks in stilt houses and floating fish farms.
Swim and relax at Cồn Đen Beach, especially during the summer months. The beach has simple seafood restaurants and basic facilities.
Take a boat trip along the Diêm Hộ or Trà Lý rivers to explore the mangrove-fringed waterways and observe traditional fishing techniques.
Visit during the fishing season to see the daily catch brought ashore at coastal communes.
Birdwatching in the estuarine zones, which host migratory waterfowl in winter.
Cycle through the flat coastal landscape, passing salt pans, shrimp farms, and rice paddies.

Thái Thụy's coastal location means seafood dominates the local diet. Tôm sú (giant tiger prawns), cua biển (sea crabs), and cá bống (goby fish) are abundant. Seafood restaurants along the coast, particularly at Cồn Đen, serve freshly caught items simply prepared — steamed, grilled over charcoal, or in sour soups.
- Cồn Đen seafood eateries — Open-air restaurants serving prawns, crabs, squid, and fish, usually 100,000–200,000 dong per person.
- Diêm Điền market food stalls — Breakfast phở, bún riêu (crab noodle soup), and bánh cuốn (25,000–40,000 dong).
- Riverside villages have small quán nhậu (drinking eateries) serving grilled seafood in the evenings.
- Vegetarian options exist in Buddhist temple canteens during festivals; otherwise limited in this seafood-centric area.
Cafes & Nightlife
Green tea and sugarcane juice are popular daytime drinks. Bia hơi is widely available at evening seafood restaurants. Bottled water is recommended; avoid tap water.
