About Nga Nam

Nga Nam (meaning "five forks") is a district town in western Sóc Trăng Province, named for the five-way intersection of waterways that forms the centre of the town. It is best known for its floating market, one of the Mekong Delta's most authentic trading hubs. Unlike the heavily touristed floating markets of Can Tho, Nga Nam's market remains primarily a wholesale affair serving local farmers and traders. The town itself is a typical Mekong Delta settlement — flat, green, and threaded with canals, with a population that includes ethnic Khmer and Chinese minorities alongside the Vietnamese majority.

The climate is tropical monsoon, with a dry season (November to April) and a wet season (May to October). The floating market is busiest in the very early morning, regardless of season.

How to reach

By Plane

Can Tho International Airport (VCA) is about 80 km away, roughly a 1.5-hour drive by taxi or private car.

By Train

By Car / Road

Nga Nam is about 50 km from Soc Trang city via National Highway 1A and Provincial Road 940. Buses and minivans from Soc Trang's bus station serve the route regularly. The journey takes about 1 hour.

The town is compact and easily walkable. To reach the floating market or outlying areas, xe om are available. Boat rental for visiting the floating market costs about US$2–3 per person for a short tour.

Things to do

  • Nga Nam Floating Market. Best visited at dawn (05:00–06:00) when trading is at its peak. Boats laden with fruits, vegetables, and household goods tie up at the canal junction. Unlike Can Tho's Cai Rang market, this one operates all day and night on one fork of the river. Boat rental is cheap and arranged on the spot.

  • Five-way canal junction. The town's defining feature — a broad intersection of waterways where canal life unfolds: barges manoeuvre, women sell from sampans, and children swim alongside.

  • Floating market boat tour. Rent a small rowing boat or hire a motorised sampan for a dawn tour of the floating market.

  • Canal-side cycling. The flat roads around Nga Nam are excellent for exploring the countryside by bicycle.
