About Xuan Son National Park

Xuân Sơn National Park (Vietnamese: Vườn quốc gia Xuân Sơn) is a protected area in Tân Sơn District, western Phú Thọ Province, approximately 100 km from Hanoi. Established as a nature reserve in 1986 and later upgraded to a national park, it covers 150.5 km² of primary forest, limestone karst mountains, and deep river valleys. It is one of Vietnam's most biodiverse national parks, home to hundreds of bird species, numerous mammals including the endangered cao-vit crested gibbon, and a stunning array of orchids and endemic plants. The park lies at the southeastern extent of the Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range. Several Mường and Dao ethnic minority villages are located within the park boundaries, offering homestay experiences. The climate is subtropical, cooler than the lowlands: temperatures range from 15–25°C. The rainy season (June–September) brings heavy rain; the best time to visit is October–April when trails are dry and temperatures pleasant.

How to reach

By Plane

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi is the nearest airport, about 120 km east. A taxi from Hanoi or the airport costs around 1,000,000–1,500,000 dong (2–2.5 hr).

By Train

By Car / Road

From Hanoi, take National Highway 32 west through Sơn Tây and Việt Trì to Thanh Sơn, then follow Provincial Road 317 to Xuân Sơn. The drive takes about 2.5–3 hours. Public buses from Hanoi's Mỹ Đình station to Thanh Sơn or Tân Sơn are available, but a private car or motorbike is more practical for reaching the park entrance. A 4WD is recommended in the rainy season.

The best way to explore the park is on foot with a local guide. Some interior roads are passable by motorbike. Local guides can be arranged at the park headquarters or through homestays.

Things to do

  • Primary limestone forest — old-growth forest draped over dramatic karst mountains, with massive trees, lianas, and an extraordinary diversity of ferns and orchids.

  • Caves — several limestone caves in the park, including Đồng Dàng Cave and Lục Đà Cave, with stalactite formations.

  • Waterfalls — including Suối Ải Waterfall and Thác Lưng Chuồn, especially impressive in the rainy season.

  • Mường and Dao ethnic villages — traditional stilt homes and terraced fields nestled in the valleys.

  • Natural pools — clear streams with swimming holes throughout the park.

  • Trekking — the park offers several trekking routes ranging from half-day walks to 2–3 day expeditions. A popular route ascends Núi Ten (Ten Mountain, 1,100 m) for panoramic views.

  • Homestay with a Mường or Dao family — the most immersive way to experience the park's culture.

  • Birdwatching — the park is a premier birding destination with over 200 recorded species.

  • Wildlife spotting — look for langurs, macaques, civets, and the rare cao-vit crested gibbon.

  • Swimming in natural pools — cool off in the crystal-clear streams.

  • Orchid spotting — the park is famous for its wild orchids, best seen in spring (March–May).
