About Cao Lanh

Cao Lanh is the capital city of Đồng Tháp province in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. Situated on the Tiền River (a branch of the Mekong), the city serves as the administrative and economic hub of the province. Historically a modest market town, Cao Lanh grew rapidly after the Đổi Mới economic reforms, with its population now exceeding 200,000. The city is known for its relaxed riverside atmosphere, French-colonial shophouses, and proximity to the famous lotus-filled wetlands of the Mekong Delta.

The climate is tropical monsoon, with a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November. The most pleasant months are December through February when temperatures are cooler and humidity is lower. Flooding can affect riverside areas during the peak rainy months of September and October.

The city centre is compact and walkable, centred around Nguyễn Huệ Street and the Cao Lanh Market area. The Tiền River embankment is the focal point for evening recreation, with parks, statues, and casual eateries lining the waterfront.

By Plane

The nearest airport is Cần Thơ International Airport (VCA), about 70 km south of Cao Lanh — roughly a 1.5-hour drive by taxi or private car. A one-way taxi costs around 500,000–700,000 đồng. Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is about 160 km east, a 3–4 hour drive, and offers far more domestic and international connections.

By Train

By Car / Road

Cao Lanh is well connected by road. Buses from Ho Chi Minh City's Miền Đông bus station run frequently to Cao Lanh (4 hours, 150,000–200,000 đồng). Express buses also connect Cao Lanh to Cần Thơ (1.5 hours), Long Xuyên (1 hour), and Mỹ Tho (2.5 hours). National Highway 30 runs through the city, and the Cao Lãnh Bridge — a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Tiền River — links the city to the eastern bank and routes toward Ho Chi Minh City.

Cao Lanh is compact enough to explore on foot in the central district. For longer trips, xe ôm (motorbike taxis) are plentiful and cost 10,000–20,000 đồng per ride within town. Taxis are available from Mai Linh and Vinasun. Ride-hailing apps like Grab operate in the city, though coverage is less extensive than in HCMC. Bicycle rental is available at some guesthouses for exploring the rural outskirts.

  • Xẻo Quýt Forest: A 20-hectare wetland forest about 35 km southeast, featuring a submerged forest ecosystem with walking trails, birdwatching, and boat tours.

  • Boat trips on the Tiền River: Local boats offer short cruises along the river, passing floating fish farms, water hyacinth fields, and riverine villages.

  • Cycling the rural back roads: The countryside around Cao Lanh is flat and ideal for cycling through rice paddies, lotus ponds, and fruit orchards.

  • Visit during the lotus season (May–August): The lotus fields around the city are in full bloom, and local festivals celebrate the flower with art performances and culinary events.

  • Explore Xẻo Quýt: A half-day trip to the wetland forest offers canoe rides through flooded cajuput forest, birdwatching, and a glimpse of wartime revolutionary base sites.
