About Thuan Bac

Thuan Bac (Thuận Bắc) is a northern district of Ninh Thuận province, bordering Khanh Hoa province to the north and the South China Sea to the northeast. Established in 2005 from a portion of Ninh Hai district, it covers 318 km² and has a population of about 43,000. The district headquarters is Lợi Hải town, about 30 km north of Phan Rang-Thap Cham. Thuan Bac is one of the least developed districts in Ninh Thuận, characterised by dry, hilly terrain, rocky plateaus, and river valleys, with an economy based on subsistence agriculture, livestock grazing, and some small-scale mining.

The district experiences Ninh Thuận's characteristically arid climate with very low rainfall — among the lowest in Vietnam. The landscape is dominated by dry scrubland, acacia plantations, and seasonal riverbeds. The coastal portion of its northeast border includes stretches of rocky coastline. The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit.

Thuan Bac has minimal tourist infrastructure. It attracts travellers interested in remote rural landscapes, off-road motorbiking, and the Khu Di tích Ba Tháp (Three Towers historic site), a Cham-era archaeological site in the district.

How to reach

By Plane

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR, ~70 km north of Thuan Bac) is the nearest airport. A taxi south to Thuan Bac takes about 1.5 hr (~800,000 VND). Alternatively, take the shuttle to Phan Rang and then a local bus north.

By Train

The closest railway station is Thap Cham (~40 km south), on the Reunification Express line. From there, taxis and buses head north toward Thuan Bac.

By Car / Road

Thuan Bac is served by National Highway 1A, which runs through the eastern edge of the district. From Phan Rang-Thap Cham, drive north ~30 km on QL1A to reach Lợi Hải. The journey takes 30–45 minutes. Buses from Phan Rang to Cam Ranh or Nha Trang pass through Thuan Bac.

A motorbike is essential for exploring Thuan Bac, as public transport does not reach the inland hamlets. The main roads are sealed but secondary roads are unpaved and can be rough. A 4WD vehicle is useful during the rainy season.

Things to do

  • Khu Di tích Ba Tháp (Three Towers Site) — A Cham archaeological complex in Thuan Bac featuring three ancient brick towers, believed to date from the 12th–14th centuries. The site is less restored than the Phan Rang towers, giving it a more authentic, ruin-like atmosphere.

  • Off-road motorbiking — The network of unpaved tracks through dry hills and acacia plantations attracts adventure riders looking for solitude and challenging terrain.

  • Visit the Ba Tháp Cham site — Explore the three surviving Cham towers in a quiet rural setting.

  • Photography of the arid landscape — The dry, rocky plateaus of Thuan Bac are unlike anywhere else in coastal Vietnam, with stark scenery reminiscent of a savannah.

A handful of small roadside quán cơm along QL1A in Lợi Hải serve basic meals — phở, broken rice, and grilled meats. There are no restaurants in the inland area. For a wider selection, eat in Phan Rang before arriving.

Cafes & Nightlife

Vietnamese coffee and bottled soft drinks are available at roadside stalls along the highway. Bottled water must be brought from Phan Rang or purchased at small stores — the local water supply is untreated.
