Ninh Thuận is a coastal province in south-central Vietnam, bordered by Khánh Hòa to the north, Bình Thuận to the south, Lâm Đồng to the west, and the East Sea to the east. The provincial capital and transport hub is the city of Phan Rang–Tháp Chàm. In contrast to the lush wetlands of the Mekong Delta and the green hills of northern Vietnam, Ninh Thuận is the driest province in the country, characterized by semi-arid scrubland, sandstone ridges, rolling coastal dunes, and cactus-covered terrain.
The province serves as the cultural center of Vietnam's Cham community, descendants of the historic Champa kingdom that ruled the central and southern coast for centuries. Unlike archaeological ruins preserved only for display, the 13th-century brick sanctuaries of Po Klong Garai and the 17th-century Po Rome tower remain active sacred grounds where Cham priests conduct annual religious rites. Agriculture in the province reflects its dry climate; local farmers cultivate large vineyards, onion and garlic crops, apple orchards, and maintain herds of sheep and goats.
Ninh Thuận experiences a tropical semi-arid climate with high temperatures year-round. Shielded from heavy monsoons by the southern foothills of the Annamite Range, the province receives less than 800 mm of annual rainfall in coastal areas. Daytime temperatures consistently average between 27°C and 34°C, accompanied by persistent coastal winds.
When is the best time to visit?
- Dry Season (January to August): The primary travel period. January to April offers the most comfortable conditions, with daytime temperatures between 26°C and 30°C, light breezes, and clear water suitable for swimming and boat tours around Vĩnh Hy Bay. May through August brings hotter weather with highs reaching 35°C, which coincides with the summer grape harvest in June and July.
- Rainy Season (September to December): The region receives brief spells of precipitation, primarily in October and November when the northeast monsoon affects the south-central coast. Rain typically falls in short afternoon bursts rather than prolonged storms, though coastal waters can become choppy.
- Katê Festival: Celebrated during the seventh month of the Cham lunar calendar (typically late September or October), Katê is the largest Cham festival. Communities assemble at Po Klong Garai and Po Rome towers for traditional processions, sacred bathing ceremonies, folk music, and dances.
