Ky Son
Nghệ An, Viet Nam
About Ky Son
Kỳ Sơn is the westernmost district of Nghệ An province, tucked into the Trường Sơn mountain range along the border with Laos. It is one of Vietnam's most remote and least populated districts, characterized by high mountain passes, dense primary forests, and a population composed almost entirely of ethnic minority groups including the Hmong, Thai, and Khơ Mú peoples. The district's extreme remoteness has preserved traditional cultures and ecosystems that have disappeared elsewhere. Kỳ Sơn is a destination for serious adventure travellers seeking true off-the-beaten-path experiences.
The best time to visit is from November to March, when the weather is dry and cool. Mountain fog is common year-round. The rainy season (April–October) can make roads impassable.
