Why visit Cua Lo?
Cửa Lò is a major coastal resort town in Nghệ An Province along the North Central coast of Vietnam, situated 16 km east of Vinh City. Fronting the Gulf of Tonkin, the town centres around an expansive 10 km crescent of golden sand bordered by casuarina pine groves. Historically an artisanal fishing settlement at the mouth of the Cấm and Lam rivers, Cửa Lò developed into a seaside resort during the late 20th century and serves as the primary beach getaway for travelers across north-central Vietnam.
The town functions around its wide seaside thoroughfare, Bình Minh Street, where seafood restaurants, open-air beer spots, and multi-storey hotels line the seafront promenade. Offshore islands like Song Ngư shield the waters, creating shallow, gentle surf suitable for swimming throughout the summer months. Beyond sunbathing, visitors come to experience night squid fishing, early morning seafood auctions directly off wooden fishing trawlers, and excursions to coastal pagodas.
Cửa Lò experiences a tropical monsoon climate with hot, sun-drenched summers and cooler, windier winters. Temperatures range from 16°C (61°F) during the winter monsoon up to 38°C (100°F) in midsummer.
