About Bao Thang

Bảo Thắng is a rural district in south-central Lào Cai province, stretching along the Red River valley between the provincial capital of Lào Cai city to the north and the border with Yên Bái province to the south. The district capital is the town of Phố Lu, a modest transport and commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural communes. The district covers nearly 652 km² and is home to about 103,000 people (2020), with the population concentrated along the river flats and the Hanoi–Lào Cai railway corridor.

The area is primarily agricultural: rice paddies, maize, cassava, and fruit orchards line the river valley, while the hillsides support tea plantations and acacia forestry. The administrative unit of Bảo Thắng was first established in 1059 under the Lý dynasty, making it one of the oldest recorded administrative divisions in the region. Most visitors pass through Bảo Thắng on the train between Hanoi and Lào Cai without stopping, but the district offers a quieter, non-tourist impression of northern Vietnamese rural life. The climate is subtropical, with hot, wet summers (May–September) and mild, dry winters.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, about 250 km southeast. A closer airport near Sa Pa (Sapa Airport) is planned but not yet operational.

By Train

The Hanoi–Lào Cai railway line runs through Bảo Thắng district. Tằng Loỏng station and several other halts serve the district. However, most travellers use Lào Cai station (about 20 km north) or the Hanoi overnight train and get off at Phố Lu or Tằng Loỏng if pre-arranged.

By Car / Road

National Highway 70 runs through the district connecting Lào Cai city (20 km north) with Yên Bái province to the south. Buses from Lào Cai to destinations in Yên Bái pass through Bảo Thắng. The Hanoi–Lào Cai expressway has an interchange near Phố Lu.

Local buses and motorbike taxis (xe om) connect the communes. The district is spread out along the river valley; a motorbike is the most practical option for independent exploration.
