About Soc Son
Sóc Sơn is a rural district (huyện) in northern Hanoi, best known as the location of Nội Bài International Airport, Vietnam's second-busiest airport. The district lies about 30 km north of central Hanoi, bordered by Thái Nguyên province to the north, Bắc Giang and Bắc Ninh to the east, and the Hanoi districts of Mê Linh and Đông Anh to the south and west. Sóc Sơn is historically significant as the legendary site of the battle between the folk hero Thánh Gióng (Saint Gióng) and Chinese invaders — one of Vietnam's four immortal saints.
The district's name derives from "Sóc" (the tamarind fruit) and "Sơn" (mountain), referencing the twin tamarind trees on the sacred Voi Mountain (Núi Voi, also called Sóc Mountain). The area hosts the annual Gióng Festival at Sóc Temple, a UNESCO-recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage event. Sóc Sơn remains predominantly agricultural, with lakes, hills, and pagodas scattered across its 26 commune-level subdivisions.

By Plane
Nội Bài International Airport (HAN IATA) is located within Sóc Sơn district itself — about 5 km from the district capital. This is the primary gateway for most visitors. From the airport, it is a short 10–15 minute taxi ride (about 80,000–120,000 dong) to the district centre.
By Train
There is no railway station within Sóc Sơn district. The nearest station is Hanoi Railway Station, about 35 km south.
By Car / Road
Sóc Sơn is accessible from central Hanoi via National Highway 3 north (about 30 km, 40 min). Local buses from Hanoi's Gia Lâm and Mỹ Đình bus stations serve Sóc Sơn district (about 15,000–25,000 dong). The Nội Bài–Lào Cai expressway passes nearby, providing fast connections.
Public buses connect the main communes but are infrequent. Taxis from the airport can be hired for point-to-point trips. The most practical way to explore Sóc Sơn's outlying temples and lakes is by motorbike. Grab operates in the airport area. Walking is feasible only in the district capital.

Hike Voi Mountain — A short but steep climb offering sweeping views of the surrounding valley. Best in early morning or late afternoon.
Birdwatching at Đại Lải Lake — The wetlands around the lake attract migratory waterfowl and herons.
