Pleiku

Why visit Pleiku?

Pleiku is the provincial capital of Gia Lai in Vietnam's Central Highlands, situated on the Kon Tum-Pleiku plateau at an altitude of approximately 700 to 800 metres above sea level. Surrounded by volcanic peaks, tea estates, rubber plantations, and coffee farms, the city has noticeably cooler temperatures than the coastal lowlands of central Vietnam. Positioned at the intersection of National Route 14 and National Route 19, Pleiku operates as a regional transit hub connecting the central coast at Quy Nhon with the highlands and the Cambodian border at Le Thanh.

The urban center features wide commercial avenues, busy trade markets, and an ethnically diverse population comprising the Kinh majority alongside indigenous Jarai and Bahnar communities. During the Second Indochina War, Pleiku served as a major military headquarters for the US Army 4th Infantry Division and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, and the surrounding terrain retains several historical battle sites and relics. Today, the city attracts travelers interested in volcanic crater lakes, highland coffee culture, waterfall circuits, and minority village traditions.

Pleiku has a tropical highland monsoon climate with two defined seasons: a wet season spanning May through October and a dry season from November through April. Because of its highland elevation, average annual temperatures range from 21°C to 25°C, dropping lower during winter nights.
