Thanh Phu

Thạnh Phú is a coastal rural district in southeastern Bến Tre Province, covering 401 km² with a population of about 128,000 (2019). The district capital lies at Thạnh Phú town, about 45 km southeast of Bến Tre city via National Highway 57. The district is bordered by the Hàm Luông River to the north, the Cổ Chiên River to the south, Trà Vinh province to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. Thạnh Phú features a 20 km coastline with sandy beaches and extensive aquaculture operations.

The economy relies on fishing, shrimp farming, rice cultivation, and coconut production. The tropical monsoon climate brings rains from May to October; the dry season from November to April offers the best travel conditions.

The nearest airport is Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, about 130 km away. From HCMC, take a bus to Bến Tre, then transfer to a local bus heading southeast to Thạnh Phú.

Thạnh Phú town is 45 km southeast of Bến Tre via National Highway 57. Regular buses run from Bến Tre to Thạnh Phú (1.5 hr, ~35,000 VND). From Ho Chi Minh City, take a bus to Bến Tre first.

Motorbike is the most practical transport. Motorbike taxis and local buses serve the coastal communes. Bicycle rental is available in the town centre.

Thạnh Phú's coastal location means seafood is the star of the local cuisine. Grilled fish, steamed crabs, shrimp, and squid are served at beachfront restaurants. Traditional Mekong Delta dishes are also available.

Fresh coconut water is ubiquitous. Vietnamese coffee and sugarcane juice are popular. Drink bottled water.
