About Ngan Son

Ngan Son (Vietnamese: Ngân Sơn) is a rural district in northwestern Bắc Kạn province, approximately 80 km northwest of Bac Kan city. The district covers 644 km² and has a population of about 29,500, making it one of the least populous districts in the province.

The district capital is the town of Ngân Sơn (also called Vân Tùng). The population is predominantly Tày and Dao, with Hmong communities in the higher elevations. Ngan Son's terrain is mountainous and heavily forested, with narrow river valleys where rice paddies are terraced into the hillsides. The economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and the collection of forest products such as bamboo shoots, medicinal herbs, and honey. The district sits at the northern edge of Bắc Kạn province, bordering Cao Bằng province to the north. The climate is humid subtropical; winters are cool and dry, summers warm and wet.
