About Yen The

Yên Thế is a rural district of former Bắc Giang province (now part of Bắc Ninh province), located in the western part of the province and renowned for its historical significance as the centre of the Yên Thế Uprising (1885–1913), one of the longest-lasting resistance movements against French colonial rule in Vietnam. The uprising was led by the folk hero Hoàng Hoa Thám, known as Đề Thám, who commanded a guerrilla army from the district's dense forests and mountainous terrain.

The district covers a hilly and mountainous landscape with significant coal reserves, forest resources, and agricultural land. Yên Thế has a population of approximately 160,000 and the district capital is the town of Phồn Xương. The area has a substantial ethnic minority population including Tày and Nùng communities. The Yên Thế Uprising is a major subject of Vietnamese history, and the district has several memorial sites related to the resistance.
