About Hiw

Hiw (sometimes spelled Hiu) is the northernmost island in Vanuatu, part of the Torres Islands group in Torba Province. It is a raised coral island with a central plateau, surrounded by steep cliffs and fringed by white-sand beaches and coral reefs. The island's small population lives in traditional villages on the plateau, practising subsistence agriculture and fishing. Hiw is one of the most remote inhabited places in Vanuatu, with very limited transport connections and no tourist infrastructure. Visitors come for the experience of genuine isolation, pristine beaches, and the chance to see a way of life that has changed little over centuries.

The climate is tropical and maritime, with a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. The island is exposed to the full force of the Pacific Ocean, and boat access can be challenging in rough weather.

Things to do

  • Hiw's white-sand beaches — some of the finest and most deserted beaches in Vanuatu, accessible from the plateau by walking tracks.

  • The central plateau — where the island's villages are located, offering views over the ocean.

  • Traditional Torres Islands architecture — thatched houses with distinctive high-pitched roofs.

  • Coral reef platforms — exposed at low tide around the island's shoreline.

  • Swim and snorkel off the island's beaches.

  • Walk the plateau trails between villages.

  • Visit local villages to observe traditional subsistence life.

  • Beachcomb the coastline — the island's isolation means the beaches are pristine.
