About Erromango
Erromango is the largest island in Vanuatu's southern Taféa Province by area, though it is one of the most thinly populated — a vast, rugged, heavily forested island that sees very few visitors. It is famous as the most forested island in Vanuatu, with extensive stands of native hardwoods, including ancient kauri trees said to be over a thousand years old, and it carries a dark and significant history. Erromango was the centre of the 19th-century sandalwood trade, which brought violent contact between islanders and European traders, and the site of the killing of several Christian missionaries — most famously John Williams of the London Missionary Society in 1839 at Dillon's Bay (Unpongkor), an event remembered in the island's place names and in a later reconciliation ceremony.
For the adventurous traveller, Erromango offers genuine wilderness: rainforest treks among giant kauri, rivers and waterfalls, caves, white-sand beaches, reefs, and a profound sense of remoteness. The two main settlements are Dillon's Bay (Unpongkor) on the west coast and Port Narvin on the east. Tourism infrastructure is minimal — village guesthouses and guided walks rather than any resort.
The climate is tropical and humid; the dry, cooler season (May–October) is the comfortable, drier window for trekking, while the wet season (November–April) brings heavier rain and cyclone risk.

By Plane
Erromango is served by small airstrips — Dillon's Bay Airport (DLY) on the west coast and Ipota (PNI / Port Narvin area) in the southeast — with Air Vanuatu light aircraft from Port Vila and via Tanna. Schedules are sparse; book ahead and reconfirm. Guesthouses arrange pickups.
By Train
By Car / Road
By Boat
Inter-island vessels call irregularly and small boats run along the coast, but there is no reliable scheduled passenger ferry. Most visitors arrive by air.
Erromango is large, rugged, and lightly tracked; movement is on foot along forest and river trails (the main way to reach the kauri stands and waterfalls), by small boat along the coast, and by occasional 4WD over rough tracks arranged through a guesthouse. Treks require a local guide. There is no public transport and no banking; carry cash.

Sandalwood and missionary history sites — places tied to the 19th-century sandalwood trade and the killing (and later reconciliation) of missionaries.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food is built on root crops (taro, yam, manioc), greens, fresh fish and shellfish, tropical fruit, and laplap. There are no proper restaurants — you eat at your guesthouse, where meals are included or arranged; trekkers carry provisions. Vegetarians are easily accommodated; mention dietary needs when booking.
Cafes & Nightlife
Kava is taken in the village nakamal at dusk; southern Vanuatu kava is potent. Fresh coconut water and basic soft drinks are available; alcohol is limited.
Water safety: treat tap, river, rain-tank, and bore water as not reliably potable — drink bottled, boiled, or filtered water and be cautious with ice.
