About Vobkent

Vobkent is a town in the Buxoro Region, located about 25 km north-east of Bukhara on the road to Navoi. It is best known for the Vobkent Minaret, a 12th-century brick tower that is the town's most prominent landmark and one of the few surviving medieval structures in the area. The town itself is a small agricultural centre with cotton fields and orchards surrounding it.

The climate is arid continental: hot summers (up to 37°C), cold winters (around −2°C), with most rain in spring and autumn. The town is compact, with the minaret standing at its centre near the main square and bazaar.

Things to do

  • Vobkent Minaret — a 12th-century brick minaret, similar in style to the Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara but smaller. Built during the Karakhanid dynasty, it stands about 40 m tall and is decorated with intricate brickwork. The minaret is freely accessible in the town centre.

  • Vobkent Bazaar — a local market with fresh produce and household goods.

  • Old town quarter — traditional mud-brick houses and narrow lanes around the minaret.

  • Minaret photography — the tower is best photographed in the late afternoon golden light.

  • Day trip to Bukhara — the UNESCO Old Town is 30 minutes south-west.

  • Ceramic shopping in G'ijduvon — the pottery centre is a short drive north.
