About Lorenzo Geyres
Lorenzo Geyres is a small village in the Paysandú Department of western Uruguay, lying about 3 km northwest of national Route 3 and roughly 30 km north-northeast of the departmental capital, Paysandú (at about km 396 of Route 3). It grew up around the Queguay railway station: a cluster of houses there was first recognised as a village named "Queguay" by law on 6 July 1853, and was renamed Lorenzo Geyres and raised to the status of pueblo by law on 29 May 1928. The 2011 census recorded 774 inhabitants in the village itself, with the wider municipality numbering around 2,000.
This is a tranquil, railway-born settlement set in the ranching and farming country of the Uruguayan littoral. For travellers its chief interest is its proximity to the Meseta de Artigas, one of the region's most significant historical and natural sites, on the cliffs above the Río Uruguay. Lorenzo Geyres is a quiet stop for those exploring the Route 3 corridor between Paysandú and Salto, offering a genuine taste of small-town interior Uruguay.
The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers (December–February, often above 30°C) and mild, damp winters. Spring (October–November) and autumn (March–April) are the most pleasant seasons for sightseeing and visiting the Meseta de Artigas.

By Car / Road
Lorenzo Geyres lies about 3 km off Route 3, at roughly km 396, some 30 km north of the city of Paysandú; the access roads are paved. Long-distance and local buses running the Paysandú–Salto corridor along Route 3 serve the area, with connections into the village. A car is the easiest way to reach the Meseta de Artigas and the surrounding countryside.
Lorenzo Geyres is a small, flat village best explored on foot; its streets, plaza and few services are within easy walking distance. There is no urban public transport. To reach the Meseta de Artigas and rural sites you will want a private car or arranged transport, as public services to the countryside are sparse. Cycling is feasible within the village.
Things to do
Meseta de Artigas — the area's premier sight, a plateau on fluvial cliffs up to 50 m high above the Río Uruguay. It bears a monument to national hero José Gervasio Artigas, inaugurated in 1899 and declared a national historical monument in 2003; the 37 m structure rises from a stone, pyramid-shaped base topped by a pink-granite column and a bronze bust of Artigas by sculptor Juan Azzarini. North of the plateau, Artigas established the Purificación camp, seat of the Federal League government from 1815 to 1818.
Queguay railway station and village core — the historic station that gave rise to the town, with its plaza and old-world rural atmosphere.
Río Uruguay clifftops — the dramatic riverside escarpment around the Meseta, among the highest points of the littoral plain, with sweeping views.
Visit the Meseta de Artigas — walk the plateau, see the Artigas monument and take in the views over the Río Uruguay; the essential outing, and the focus of major equestrian commemorations each year that draw riders from across the country.
Explore the riverside and countryside — hike or drive the clifftops and the Queguay-area campo for nature and history.
Experience village life — soak up the unhurried atmosphere of a railway village in Uruguay's interior.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Dining is limited and informal: a few cafés, rotiserías and grill spots serve classic Uruguayan fare — asado (grilled beef and lamb), chivito, milanesas, pasta, pizza and empanadas, with dulce de leche for dessert. Vegetarians will find pasta, pizza and salads but few dedicated options. For a wider choice of restaurants, Paysandú (30 km south) is the regional hub.
Cafes & Nightlife
Mate (yerba maté in a thermos and gourd) is the constant Uruguayan drink, carried by locals everywhere. Café and soft drinks are available at local shops. For alcohol, Uruguayan beers (Pilsen, Patricia) and tannat wines are the standards at the village's few bars. Tap water in Uruguay is generally safe to drink.
