Lagomar
Canelones, Uruguay
About Lagomar
Lagomar is a residential beach neighbourhood near the centre of Ciudad de la Costa, in southwestern Canelones Department, sitting at roughly km 22 of Avenida Luis Giannattasio. It lies between San José de Carrasco to the west and Solymar to the east, with the Río de la Plata along its southeastern edge. Of all the coastal neighbourhoods it is the closest to Carrasco International Airport — only about 3 km away — which makes it a quiet, green place to land or take off from.
The name is a simple fusion of lago (lake) and mar (sea), for the two small lakes that sit on either side of Giannattasio: the "Jardín de Bosque de Carrasco" to the north and "Lago Lagomar" to the south, both left behind by old sand extraction and now leafy recreation spots. The land was subdivided for development by the company MAR S.A. in 1952–53; like its neighbours, Lagomar began as a summer-holiday balneario and shifted to permanent, year-round living through the 1970s. Today around 8,000 people live here.
The character is unhurried and suburban — sandy lanes shaded by pines and pampas grass, modest beach houses, and a wide, slightly wild beach with strong waves and the brown, brackish water typical of the upper Río de la Plata. Come in summer (December–February) for warm days and a busy beach; the rest of the year is mild but very quiet.

By Plane
Carrasco International Airport (IATA: MVD) is only about 3 km away — the nearest of any Ciudad de la Costa neighbourhood. A taxi or ride-hailing trip from the terminal takes just a few minutes. MVD is Uruguay's principal airport, with flights to Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, Panama City and Madrid among others.
By Train
By Car / Road
From Montevideo it is about 20 km (20–30 minutes) east via Avenida Italia and Avenida Giannattasio, or via the Ruta Interbalnearia, exiting toward the coast. COPSA suburban buses run frequently along Giannattasio from Montevideo, stopping throughout Lagomar; ride-hailing apps and taxis cover the short hop from the airport.
Lagomar is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle along its quiet, partly unpaved streets, though the beach and the commercial strip on Giannattasio are the main draws. COPSA buses run constantly along Avenida Giannattasio, linking the neighbourhood to its neighbours, to Costa Urbana Shopping and to Montevideo. Uber and Cabify operate reliably and are the simplest way to reach the airport or move between barrios. A car is convenient but not essential for a beach stay.
Things to do
- Lagomar beach — A broad, dune-backed stretch of the Río de la Plata coast, wilder and less manicured than Montevideo's beaches, with strong waves; part of the city's long Rambla Costanera.
- Lago Lagomar — A small lake south of Avenida Giannattasio, formed in a disused sand pit, now a quiet green spot.
- Jardín de Bosque de Carrasco — The neighbourhood's second lake, north of Giannattasio, surrounded by greenery and good for a calm walk.
- Rambla Costanera — The coastal promenade runs the length of Lagomar, ideal for walking, running and watching the sunset over the river.
This is a place for simple seaside pleasures: swimming and sunbathing in summer, long walks and bike rides along the rambla, and shore fishing. The calm lakes are pleasant for a stroll or birdwatching. With the airport and Montevideo both minutes away, Lagomar also makes an easy base for day trips into the capital or eastward along the Costa de Oro. In the warm months, casual beach paradores bring daytime food and music to the sand.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
The neighbourhood table is built on grilled meat and fish. Parrillada 29 de Julio is a dependable local parrilla for asado and the standard Uruguayan grill. In summer the beach parador Nómade serves casual food on the sand. For more variety, the neighbouring barrios add options — La Diecisiete in Solymar and Las Casuarinas in Médanos de Solymar are both within a short drive — and the food court at Costa Urbana Shopping covers quick family meals year-round. Expect chivito, pizza, empanadas and fresh grilled fish across the price range.
Cafes & Nightlife
Mate is the everyday ritual — locals carry gourd and thermos along the rambla at all hours. Uruguayan wines, especially Tannat from the nearby Canelones vineyards, and local beer are easy to find at restaurants and shops. Summer beach paradores turn into sunset bars; cafés along Giannattasio serve coffee year-round. Tap water is safe to drink.

Ask on WhatsAppPlaces to Stay
Lagomar's lodging is dominated by apartment rentals and cabañas rather than hotels, with rates rising sharply in the summer peak.
- Budget: Off-season apartment and cabaña rentals can be found from roughly US$35–60 per night.
- Mid-range: Better-equipped apartment rentals and small apart-hotels in the neighbourhood run roughly US$60–100 in season; book through the major platforms and verify current rates.
- Upscale / heritage: There is no dedicated upscale hotel in Lagomar itself; the nearest full-service option is Hampton by Hilton Montevideo Carrasco (~US$130/night), a few kilometres west near the airport.
What to buy
Everyday shopping is along Avenida Giannattasio — supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and small shops. The area's main retail destination, Costa Urbana Shopping (Av. Giannattasio km 21), is a short ride west, with over 100 stores, a cinema and a food court. Lagomar itself is residential rather than a craft-market town; for souvenirs, head to the resort towns further east or into Montevideo.
