About Woonsocket

Woonsocket is a city in northern Rhode Island along the Massachusetts border, with a rich French-Canadian heritage and a strong industrial history. Located in Providence County, the city was once a major textile manufacturing center, powered by the Blackstone River. Today, Woonsocket has evolved into a diverse community that preserves its French-Canadian roots while embracing new cultural and economic opportunities.

Woonsocket's history is deeply tied to the textile industry and the waves of French-Canadian immigrants who came to work in its mills. The Museum of Work & Culture tells this compelling story, illustrating how families left the farms of Quebec for the factories of New England while maintaining their faith, language, and customs. The annual Autumnfest celebration, held every Columbus Day weekend, showcases the community's spirit with food, music, and one of Rhode Island's biggest parades.

The city is best visited from May through October, when outdoor festivals and events are in full swing. Autumnfest in early October is the signature event. The climate is typical New England with warm summers and cold winters. The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, passing through Woonsocket, offers historical tours and scenic beauty.
