About Roswell
Roswell is a city in Chaves County, southeastern New Mexico, with a population of about 48,000. It is internationally famous as the site of the alleged 1947 UFO crash and the subsequent government cover-up that has fueled decades of conspiracy theories and pop culture fascination. The city has fully embraced its alien mythology, with themed restaurants, shops, and an annual UFO festival that draws visitors from around the world.
Beyond the UFO phenomenon, Roswell has a rich history as a cattle ranching center and was once home to the infamous frontier outlaw Billy the Kid (born in the area, though raised in Silver City). The city was a significant training基地 for Army Air Forces pilots during World War II, and the Roswell Army Air Field was where the atomic bomb-carrying B-29s took off for their missions over Japan. Today, the area economy is based on agriculture (particularly pecans and cotton), oil and gas, and tourism.
The climate is semi-arid with hot summers (highs in the 90s–100s°F) and mild winters (highs in the 50s–60s°F). Precipitation is sparse, averaging about 12 inches annually, mostly in summer monsoon thunderstorms. The area receives over 270 sunny days per year. Spring can be windy, and occasional dust storms affect visibility.
