About Hannibal

Hannibal is a small city in northeastern Missouri, located approximately 100 miles northwest of St. Louis on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Best known as the boyhood home of author Samuel Longhorn Clemens — better known as Mark Twain — Hannibal is where Twain set his beloved novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Many historical sites throughout the city revolve around Twain and his writings, which occupy a prominent place in the history of the Underground Railroad era. The city has a population of about 17,000 and maintains a charming small-town atmosphere with well-preserved 19th-century architecture.

Hannibal's historic downtown along Main Street features museums, shops, restaurants, and river views. The city hosts National Tom Sawyer Days annually, drawing visitors for fence-painting contests, frog-jumping competitions, and other Twain-themed events. The climate is humid continental with warm, humid summers (80s°F) and cold winters (20s–30s°F). Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for walking the historic streets and trails. The Mark Twain Cave Complex and surrounding natural areas add outdoor adventure to the cultural offerings.
