About Mankato
Mankato (pronounced man-KAY-toh) is a city in southern Minnesota that exudes a college presence, with several centers of higher learning including Minnesota State University. A somewhat colorful community, it was home to Sinclair Lewis and the literary characters Betsy and Tacy. It was also the site of a darker historical event — the execution of 38 individuals in 1862 following the Dakota uprising, even during the Civil War, with President Lincoln reducing the originally much larger number of executions.
Mankato sits at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth rivers. The city is served by US Highway 169 (north–south) and US Highway 14 (east–west), with the Twin Cities metro area about 1.5 hours away. The large student population supports a relatively robust bus network and a vibrant downtown bar scene, with the notable tradition of "2 for 1 weekends" during the school year.
The city offers numerous parks, including Minneopa State Park with its bison herd and waterfall, and Riverfront Park which hosts many annual events. The climate features warm, sometimes hot summers and cold winters. The area is agricultural, with rich farmland surrounding the city.
