Why visit Council Grove?

Council Grove is a small town in the Flint Hills region of central Kansas, significant for its role as a key stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The town takes its name from the grove of trees where a council was held between the Kaw (Kanza) people and white settlers in 1825. Today, Council Grove retains much of its historic character, with several preserved buildings from the 19th century and a charming downtown. The surrounding Flint Hills offer some of the last remaining tallgrass prairie in North America, making it a destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

The climate features hot summers and cold winters typical of the Great Plains. Spring and fall are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures ideal for exploring the town's historic sites and nearby prairie. The town is small and compact, centered along Main Street (K-177).
