The city's most famous attractions include the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, which houses one of the world's largest collections of US and Soviet space artifacts, and the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, where visitors can descend 650 feet below the surface into an active salt mine.
The climate features hot summers and cold winters, with the State Fair held annually in early fall. Hutchinson is located along US-50, about 45 miles northwest of Wichita and 100 miles southwest of Kansas City. The city has a functional public transit system (RCAT) and a walkable downtown area.

By Train
Amtrak's daily Southwest Chief (Chicago–Los Angeles) stops in Hutchinson. This stop has no ticket office or Quik-Trak machine, so tickets must be purchased online or at another station. The station is at North Walnut Street and East 3rd Avenue. Local bus routes 1 (north blue) and 2 (east purple) stop near Main Street and East 2nd Ave.
By Car / Road
Hutchinson is located along US-50, roughly 45 miles northwest of Wichita (about 45 minutes) and 100 miles southwest of Kansas City (about 1 hour 45 minutes). Greyhound bus lines (+1 620-663-8622) has a stop at 200 E Ave A, with service between Wichita and Salina with stops at Lindsborg, McPherson, and Newton.
Reno County Area Transit (RCAT) provides bus service in the city. Phone: +1 620-694-2913. Buses run 6AM–7PM Monday through Friday, and 7AM–6PM on Saturdays. No Sunday service. Fares are $1 per ride; a 30-ride pass costs $27; a 10-ride ticket book costs $10. Passes available at the transit office, 120 West Avenue B. The main hub is at South Adams Street and West Avenue A.

Kansas Underground Salt Museum — 3504 East Avenue G (on Airport Road between Highway 50 and the airport), toll-free +1-866-755-3450. Tu–Sat 9AM–6PM, Sun 1–6PM. Explore a salt mine 650 feet underground with an underground museum and "dark ride" tram tour. Children must be at least 4 years old. $20 adults, $13 children.
Reno County Museum — 100 S Walnut St (at Avenue A), +1 620-662-1184. Tu-Sa 11AM-5PM. Suggested donation: Adults $2, Children $1.
Dillon Nature Center — 3002 East 30th (just east of K-61), +1 620-663-7411. 8AM to dusk. A 100-acre nature park with ponds, hiking trails, and an indoor visitor center. Free.
Hedrick's Exotic Animal Farm — 7910 N Roy L. Smith Rd, Nickerson (+1 620-465-3612, 8 miles west on Highway 96), toll-free +1-888-489-8039. A bed & breakfast and exotic animal farm. Call ahead.
Yoder Amish Community — 11 miles southeast on K-96. A small Amish community with downtown shops and the Carriage Crossing restaurant.
Carey Park — South end of Hutchinson. Large park with golf course, Hutchinson Zoo, and Salt City Splash water park.
Salt City Splash Aquatic Center — 1601 S Plum. A public water park.
Kansas State Fair — 2000 N Poplar St, +1 620-669-3600, toll-free +1-800-362-3247. Held annually in early fall. $6 adults, $3 kids, $4 seniors, $35 season pass.
Hutchinson Fox Theater — 18 E 1st Ave, +1 620-663-5861. A historic theater hosting performances and events.
