Liberal
Kansas, United States
Why visit Liberal?
Liberal is a town in southwestern Kansas, positioned at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 54 and U.S. Highway 83. With a trading area covering corners of five states — Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas — it serves as a regional hub for the heart of the Great Plains. The town was named for early settlers who were "liberal" with the scarce supply of water. Liberal is known for its annual Pancake Day celebration, its Wizard of Oz-themed attractions, and the Mid-America Air Museum, which houses one of the largest aircraft collections in the United States.
The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and cold, dry winters. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures. The town is laid out in a grid pattern at the intersection of its two main highways, with most services and attractions concentrated along the main corridors.
