About Sandpoint
Sandpoint is a popular resort city and tourist destination in northern Idaho, on the shore of Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced "Pond-Orr-Ay") — one of the largest and deepest lakes in the Pacific Northwest. Although Idaho is generally recognized as a mountain state, Sandpoint and other far-northern Idaho cities are most often categorized as part of the Pacific Northwest. With a population of about 8,700 (2018), Sandpoint punches far above its weight in charm, culture, and natural beauty. The closest city of more than 100,000 is Spokane, Washington, 78 miles away.
Sandpoint has transitioned from humble timber and fishing beginnings to become one of Idaho's top destinations. It was named #1 on USA Today's list of Unforgettable Summer Vacations, Sunset Magazine's top small Western Town, and has received numerous other accolades. The town has a vibrant arts community, with numerous galleries, the Panida Theater, and an annual music festival.
The climate is unique in the region. Despite being near the deserts of eastern Washington, Sandpoint sits on the rainy side of the Rocky Mountains and receives substantial precipitation. Winters are long and cold (average temperatures below freezing, dipping to -20°F for a week or two in February); summers are short and hot (80–90°F, occasionally reaching 100°F). Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–early November) are generally rainy and cool. Thunderstorms are common on hot summer afternoons, and windstorms strike most in spring.
The area follows Pacific Time (UTC-8). Many stores accept Canadian currency due to proximity to the Canadian border and the large number of Canadian tourists.

By Plane
Sandpoint's airport is only served by charter planes — getting in and out is complex and expensive. Spokane International Airport (GEG), about 2 hours southwest, is the practical option. GEG is a hub for Horizon Air, Delta, Frontier, and Big Sky Air, with United and Southwest also flying there. Most flights leave from Seattle or Portland, so expect to connect through the Pacific Coast even if heading east.
By Train
Sandpoint station, 450 Railroad Ave (next to the marina) — Served by Amtrak's Empire Builder, operating daily between Seattle/Portland and Chicago, including stops at Spokane, Glacier National Park, Fargo, Saint Paul, and Milwaukee. The trains split/merge between Seattle-Portland and Spokane. All trains arrive at and depart from Sandpoint late at night. Station doors unlock automatically 1 hour before the scheduled arrival.
By Car / Road
From Seattle/Portland: I-90 eastbound is fastest; in Coeur d'Alene, take Hwy 95 north. The scenic alternative is Hwy 2 through northern Washington.
