About East Haddam

East Haddam is a town of about 9,000 people (2020) in the Connecticut River Valley. The town is best known for Gillette Castle State Park, the quirky stone castle built by actor William Gillette (famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes), and the Goodspeed Opera House, a renowned regional theater that has launched many Broadway productions. The Connecticut River forms the town's western boundary, and the seasonal ferry crossing adds to its picturesque New England charm.

The town was founded in 1685 and named after Haddam, England. It sits in a scenic river valley with rolling hills, forests, and farmland. The historic village center features colonial-era buildings, antique shops, and small restaurants. East Haddam is about 1.5 hours from Boston, 2 hours from New York City, and 1 hour from Providence.

The climate follows typical New England patterns, with warm, humid summers and cold winters. The best times to visit are late spring through early fall, when the Goodspeed Opera House is in season and outdoor activities at Devil's Hopyard and Gillette Castle are at their best.
