Why visit Georgetown?
Georgetown is a historic mountain town in Clear Creek County, Colorado, located at one end of the scenic Guanella Pass. Situated about 45 miles northwest of Denver along Interstate 70, Georgetown was founded during the silver mining boom of the 1860s and retains its Victorian-era character. The town is a popular day-trip destination from Denver, offering a glimpse into Colorado's mining heritage amid stunning mountain scenery.
The Georgetown Visitors Center is conveniently located right off I-70. With over 200 historic buildings, the town's well-preserved architecture includes notable structures like the Bowman-White House and Hamill House. The area sits at approximately 8,500 feet elevation in a narrow canyon along Clear Creek, surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest.
Georgetown's charm lies in its compact, walkable historic district combined with easy access to outdoor recreation. The famous Georgetown Loop Railroad, a restored narrow-gauge heritage railway, is one of the town's signature attractions. The surrounding mountains offer hiking, fishing, and scenic drives, particularly along the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway.
