Glenwood Springs

Colorado, United States

Why visit Glenwood Springs?

Glenwood Springs is located in the western half of Colorado, at the confluence of the Colorado River and the Roaring Fork River in the Roaring Fork Valley. The town sits roughly halfway between Vail and Aspen at about the same elevation as Denver. It is famous for its hot springs pool, which is the largest mineral hot springs pool in the world.

Originally named Defiance, the town was renamed by settlers from an Iowa town called Glenwood. Many nearby towns like Aspen and Leadville experienced their booms while Glenwood Springs was still in its infancy, partly because the canyons to the east and west made access difficult. The town grew thanks to its location on the railroad and the Colorado River. Today, Glenwood Springs is a gateway to the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by public lands including the White River National Forest, and offers world-class fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, and kayaking on its two rivers.

The climate features four distinct seasons with warm summers ideal for outdoor activities and snowy winters perfect for skiing at nearby Sunlight Mountain Resort. The town has a relaxed, outdoorsy atmosphere with easy access to both Aspen's cultural scene and remote mountain wilderness.
