Tempe is a vibrant city in the Phoenix metropolitan area, home to Arizona State University (ASU) and known for its youthful energy, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreation. With a population of approximately 200,000 (including the university student population), Tempe is one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in Arizona. The city is located along the Salt River and features a mix of urban development, historic neighborhoods, and natural areas.

Founded in 1871, Tempe has evolved from an agricultural community into a center for education, technology, and culture. How to reach

By Plane

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is located just west of Tempe, approximately 5 miles away. A taxi or ride-hail to central Tempe costs $10-20. Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) is about 20 miles east.

By Train

By Car / Road

Tempe is easily accessible via multiple highways. From Phoenix, take I-10 east to Loop 202 or AZ 143. From Tucson, take I-10 west. From Mesa, take US 60 west. The city is well-connected to the Phoenix metropolitan freeway system, including Loop 101, Loop 202, and I-10.

Tempe is well-served by Valley Metro Light Rail, which runs through the city connecting to Phoenix and Mesa. Bus service is also available throughout the metropolitan area. The downtown Tempe area, centered around Mill Avenue, is very walkable, with restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues within easy walking distance. Ride-hailing services (Uber, Lyft) are widely available. Tempe also has an extensive bike-sharing program.
