Eufaula

Eufaula is a historic town on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River in the River Heritage region of southeastern Alabama. Known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and antebellum mansions, Eufaula has a complex past — secessionists terrorized abolitionists before the Civil War, and white supremacists killed at least seven Black people during the Election Riot of 1874. Despite this troubled history, the town has preserved some of the finest historic architecture in the state. Today, Eufaula is a quiet, charming community that draws visitors for its historic homes, outdoor recreation on Lake Eufaula (Walter F. George Reservoir), and Southern hospitality. The climate features hot, humid summers and mild winters.

Eufaula is at the junction of US 82 and US 431, providing access to Dothan (south), Columbus, GA (east), and Montgomery (west). From Montgomery, the drive is about 90 minutes southeast.

Eufaula is a small town best explored by car. The historic downtown and residential areas are walkable for short distances.

The Shorter Mansion — 340 N Eufaula Ave, ☏ +1 334-687-3793. M–Sa 10AM–4PM. A Classical Revival-style home built in 1884, rebuilt in 1906 after a fire. Features tours and a museum on the second floor.

Hart House — 211 N Eufaula Ave. A Greek Revival home dating to 1850, one of the oldest in Eufaula. Not open to the public.

Fendall Hall — 917 W Barbour St, ☏ +1 334-687-8469. M–Sa 10AM–4PM. An Italianate-style home with wood construction and a cupola, built around 1856.

The Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District — 500 N Randolph. The historical commercial strip worth a stroll.

The Tree That Owns Itself — At the junction of Cotton, Highland, and N Eufaula Aves. An obscure landmark with local lore about the tree owning the land where it has taken root.

Yoholo Micco Rail Trail — 404 E Broad St. A rail trail with a Creek Indian name, anchored by Manny the 12-Foot-Tall Fish statue at the south end, offering walking and biking along the Chattahoochee.

Old Creek Town Recreation Area — 1198 Lake Dr, ☏ +1 334-687-1213. A Chattahoochee riverside park with swimming and scenic views.

Lakepoint State Park — 104 Old Hwy 165, ☏ +1 334-687-8011. A riverside park with a resort, cafeteria, cabins, pool, and campground.

Lake Eufaula — Known as the "Bass Capital of the World," the lake offers exceptional fishing, boating, and water sports.

Water is safe to drink in Eufaula. The town has limited nightlife with restaurants serving beer and wine.
