Rukungiri is a town in the Kigezi highlands of south-western Uganda, serving as the administrative headquarters of Rukungiri District. Located on a hilltop with panoramic views of the surrounding terraced hillsides, the town is a regional commercial centre. The area is known for its Irish potatoes, beans, and coffee cultivation on the steep, intensively farmed slopes.

The Bakiga people are the dominant ethnic group, and Rukiga is the primary language. The town has a cool highland climate.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Entebbe International Airport (EBB IATA), about 350 km east.

By Train

There is no passenger train service to Rukungiri.

By Car / Road

Matatus from Kabale and Mbarara serve Rukungiri. Roads are paved from Kabale (1.5 hours). From Kampala, the journey is about 6 hours.

Boda-bodas are the main local transport. The town centre is compact and walkable.
