Why visit Rwenzori Mountains National Park?
Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects the Rwenzori Mountains — the fabled "Mountains of the Moon" described by Ptolemy in 150 AD. Straddling the Uganda–DRC border, the Rwenzoris are Africa's third-highest mountain range, with Margherita Peak reaching 5,109 m on Mount Stanley. The park is renowned for its unique alpine vegetation, including giant lobelias, groundsel, and heather that create a surreal, otherworldly landscape.
The park covers 996 km² and is one of Africa's premier mountaineering destinations. The standard trek to Margherita Peak takes 7–10 days and traverses five distinct vegetation zones from montane forest to glacial peaks.
