The area is primarily agricultural, with dairy farming, bananas, and coffee as the main economic activities. Ibanda is known for its cattle ranches and the famous Ankole long-horned cattle.
The Banyankole people are the dominant ethnic group, and Runyankore is widely spoken.

There is no passenger train service to Ibanda.
By Car / Road
Matatus from Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Kamwenge serve Ibanda. The road from Mbarara is paved and takes about 1.5 hours.
Boda-bodas are the main local transport. The town centre is small and walkable.
