About Tumaseu

Tumaseu is a village on the eastern side of Vaitupu island in Tuvalu, with a population of about 248 according to the 2012 census. It is the smaller of Vaitupu's two villages, connected to the larger village of Asau by an unpaved track that crosses the island. The village area covers about 0.04 km².

Vaitupu is one of the larger and more fertile islands of Tuvalu, known for its coconut plantations, pulaka cultivation, and the Motufoua Secondary School campus located between the two villages. The people of Tumaseu maintain traditional Tuvaluan lifestyles centered on fishing, agriculture, and church participation.

The climate is tropical marine (26–32°C). The best time to visit is May to October.

How to reach

By Plane

Fly to Funafuti International Airport (FUN). Take the inter-island ferry Nivaga III to Vaitupu (6–8 hours). Walk or take a boat from the landing to Tumaseu.

By Train

By Car / Road

Tumaseu is small and walkable. The rest of Vaitupu is reached by foot along the coastal or inland tracks. No vehicles.
